FOURSURE

October 2, 2026 Puzzle Breakdown

Four groups, four words each — here's the connections between today's words.

How everyone did today i How do we calculate score?

Easiest

The four evangelists

Matthew, Mark, Luke, John

As the traditional authors of the four canonical gospels in the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are collectively known as the four evangelists. There is no hidden wordplay or misdirection here, making this the most straightforward and easiest set on the board today.

Trickier

Gender neutral names

Chris, Taylor, Alex, Charlie

These four are all classic gender-neutral names that comfortably suit anyone, regardless of who you are picturing. Falling squarely on the easier side of today's board, the challenge was mostly resisting the urge to link them to specific celebrities or fictional characters. Once you looked past any pop-culture associations, the shared unisex trait was right there in the open.

Harder

Non-primary Colors of the Rainbow

Orange, Green, Indigo, Violet

Everyone remembers the classic mnemonic, but today you had to leave red, yellow, and blue at the door. Orange, green, indigo, and violet are the non-primary colors filling out the rest of the traditional rainbow spectrum. Spotting the Roy G. Biv connection was easy enough, but filtering out the primary shades made this the second-hardest hurdle in today's grid.

Hardest

Supergirl (2015) Characters

Kara Danvers, James Olson, Winslow Schott Jr., J'onn J'onzz

You might know them better as Supergirl, Guardian, Winn, and the Martian Manhunter, but this group demanded their civilian and birth identities instead. Every name on this list belongs to a key character from the 2015 television series Supergirl. We saved this for the hardest slot of the day to see if you could still recognize the crew of the DEO without their superhero aliases.

Why these four groups

This grid balances obvious cultural quartets against subtle name crossovers to keep solvers honest. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John lock down the easiest tier purely on biblical muscle memory, safely bypassing James Olson despite James dangling as a potential apostle trap. Meanwhile, Alex pulls double duty between everyday unisex names and Supergirl lore, tempting solvers to split the Danvers family early. The rainbow non-primaries supply a clean, self-contained palette cleanse in the middle, leaving the full-named DC characters to anchor the top difficulty once you realize Alex belongs with Chris, Taylor, and Charlie.
